AI’s Rapid Ascent: Key Trends from the 2026 UK Financial Services Survey

UK Banking Embraces AI: A 2026 Snapshot

By 2026, 86% of UK financial firms reported using AI in some capacity. Generative AI and large language models now account for about 56% of deployed AI systems, with the highest activity concentrated in Operations and IT functions. The Bank of England and FCA survey shows firms moving from pilots to scaled use cases focused on efficiency and productivity gains.

The Rise of Third-Party AI and Agents

Third-party AI systems represent 39% of all AI deployments and 53% of systems judged to be of high materiality. This concentration creates supplier dependence and single points of failure. AI agents are becoming common, but most operate with limited autonomy under human oversight rather than full decision-making independence.

Benefits Outweighed by Intensifying Risks

Firms cite operational efficiency and improved productivity as leading benefits. At the same time, data protection concerns rank top among risks. Third-party vulnerabilities, model explainability gaps specific to Generative AI, and the potential for amplified cyber risk across interconnected systems are seen as rising threats. The survey flags GenAI-specific risks such as hallucinations, data leakage, and misuse of synthetic outputs.

Constraints, Governance and Regulatory Focus

Adoption is shaped by practical constraints: integration difficulty with legacy infrastructure, resourcing and compliance with UK data protection laws and evolving international rules. In response, many firms report formal governance frameworks, defined accountability lines and pre-deployment controls for higher-risk models. Supervisory attention from the Bank of England and the FCA is pushing firms toward stronger third-party risk management and model validation practices.

For finance leaders, the takeaway is clear: AI is fast becoming core to operations, but managing third-party concentration, GenAI risks and cyber interdependencies will determine whether benefits are realised safely at scale.
